We Chicagoans put up with our winters just so we can enjoy summertime in Chicago – yes, it’s finally time to throw off the mantle of winter and get out and experience our fabulous city – we’ve listed just a few of the Chicago attractions that allow you to get to know Chicago with your furry friends.
Who doesn’t enjoy spending time at the beach? For those dogs whose people already know about Montrose, the dog friendly beach, lucky you! For those of you not familiar, this beach has truly gone to the dogs – you may not want to lay on a towel here, but you will want to take some towels for afterwards because your dog will be playing in the water and generally having a great time romping on the beach. Check out the rules before you go and make sure you take appropriate steps to keep your dog, yourself, the beach and the water clean & safe – pick up after your pet and don’t let them do #2 in the water. If you can volunteer some extra time, there are park clean up days on April 23 and May 21, so grab a leash and head out for a great time. http://www.mondog.org/index.php
If you want a little party action with your beach break, why not check out PAWS Chicago Beach Party on July 14th! See how fundraising and partying go hand in paw with pictures from past years: http://www.pawschicago.org/events-dog-training/fundraising-events/beach-party-event/
If your pet loves the water, but doesn’t want to get its paws wet, check out Mercury’s Canine Cruise - this cruise will take your and your dog on a tour of the river & lake while providing a unique view of Chicago’s history and architecture. Your pooch can sit with you or have its own seat – and yes, there are even “facilities” for those furries in need of a bathroom breakhttp://www.mercurycruises.com/tours
One dilemma you won’t have to consider on Sept 16th is whether to spend time with your dog or go to the ball game. Yes, you can take your dog to the park & eat a ball park “dog” too - Bark in the Park is back for another season! On Sept 16, you and your furry fan can enjoy the day and cheer on the Sox at the same time. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/schedule/promotions.jsp?c_id=cws
If you would rather get your “bark on” at another park, check out a completely different Bark in the Park event at Soldier Field: http://jgriggs46.wix.com/i-bark-in-the-park This is the 22nd year for the fundraising activity put on by the Anti-Cruelty Society which lets you and your dog participate in a 5k WALK together with other dog lovers.
Another suggestion is to combine your love of the outdoors, music and dogs by attending West Fest. This street festival, located on Chicago Ave between Damen & Wood on July 8th, 9th & 10th, has something for everyone – arts, crafts, food, music and both a kids fest and dogs fest. WOW! http://www.westfestchicago.com/fest/
Finally, if your idea of a great summer is chillin’ in your neighborhood and enjoying a meal or a drink with both your people friends and your furry friends, check out this link! https://www.thrillist.com/eat/chicago/best-dog-friendly-bars-and-restaurants-in-chicago – probably a good idea to phone your choice of pub or restaurant to make sure the rules haven’t changed and that you can still bring your fuzzball, but please only take your dog if it is well behaved and on a leash – while you may think “fido” is adorable & unresistable when begging, others might not want to share!
These are just a few of the fantastic opportunities for you to get out & about in Chicago this summer. Enjoy!!
